In 1933 France, Christine begins work as a maid for Madame Danzard, while her younger sister Lea is also hired to work in the household. The sisters move into the Danzard mansion and quickly confront the rigid class boundaries that separate their worlds. The Danzards view them with condescension, and the sisters feel increasingly alienated.

The household's members drift apart as the Danzards keep the sisters at a distance and rarely speak directly to them. The atmosphere grows chilling as the class divide crystallizes into daily snubs and prying gazes. The two pairs of women exist in proximity but remain emotionally remote.

The sisters' relationship deepens into a sexual bond amid the mounting tension of servitude and surveillance. They lean on each other to cope with trauma from their mother and church. Their closeness becomes another source of strain within the household.

Lea has always been their mother's favorite, but Christine convinces her to stop giving all earnings to their mother. The sisters sever ties with their mother, disrupting family support networks. With the new independence comes money for themselves, yet emotional ties weaken.

Having more money for themselves, the sisters' work begins slipping and they grow thinner and more tired. Madame Danzard notices these changes with meticulous attention, signaling a worsening dynamic in the household. The tension in the mansion intensifies as suspicion edges closer.

Over time, rumors circulate that Isabelle will marry and move out of the household. Christine grows paranoid that Lea might move away with her, threatening Christine's stability. Lea reassures Christine that nothing will change.

Overwhelmed by rage and fear of losing their place, the sisters brutally murder Madame Danzard and her daughter Isabelle. The crime marks a fatal break from their precarious status, sealing their isolation.

The film closes with a crime report detailing the state of the corpses as an investigator's questions begin to play. Audio of the interrogation overlays Christine's desperate pleas to Lea. The sisters cling to each other, terrified of what comes next.

The final shot shows a knock on the mansion door as the investigation unfolds, leaving the sisters trapped in fear and uncertainty. The audience is left with the sense that the repercussions of their act will follow them.
