Showdown at Boot Hill

US Marshal Luke Welsh, Charles Bronson, rides into Mound City to serve a warrant on Con Maynor and claim the $200 bounty that comes with the arrest. Maynor tries to outdraw the Marshal, but he misreads the town’s mood and loses the duel. At the coroner’s inquest, the shooting is ruled as self-defense, yet when the Marshal asks the judge to sign an affidavit confirming the facts, the paper comes back with the name missing. Without Maynor’s name on the record, the bounty cannot be collected, and the Marshal realizes that the townspeople’s affection for Maynor has created a wall of silence around him. The community’s reluctance to testify complicates the legal path to a payout, and the Marshal finds that the man who was so well liked in town has become a difficult riddle to solve.

Determined to close the case, the Marshal presses on, hoping someone in Mound City will identify Maynor. In the process, he starts to understand why Maynor left such an impression on the townsfolk. He also begins to feel a growing attraction to Sally Crane, [Fintan Meyler], the daughter of the local saloon owner, a relationship that becomes a core undercurrent to the mounting tension around him. He meets Doc Weber, [John Carradine], the town’s philosophical barber who also works as the undertaker, a man who offers quiet reflections on life, death, and consequence.

As the Marshal’s presence unsettles the town, a sense of unease grows. The residents scheme to get rid of him, first by provoking a young amateur gunman into drawing on him. The Marshal manages to wound the young rival, but the episode convinces the town’s people that vigilantism might be a quicker fix than a fair identification. A mob forms with the intent of killing him, and Jill Crane, [Carole Mathews], warns Sally and the Marshal to hide at her house. The escalating danger intensifies when the delirious, wounded gunman tracks the Marshal and shoots Jill in the ensuing struggle, a blow that shakes everyone involved.

Into this fractured atmosphere arrives Maynor’s brother, Charles, [George Douglas], with his family for the funeral. Unbeknownst to them, Charles plans to kill the Marshal as payback for his brother, but his resolve is tempered when his wife witnesses the Marshal with Sally, giving him pause and forcing a reconsideration of his plan.

The following day, at the funeral, the Marshal appears unarmed to confront Charles and claims to be the man who shot Maynor. Charles lunges at him, but the crowd intervenes, preventing a bloodier confrontation. After the tense moment, the Marshal and Doc Weber talk through the tangled events, and the conversation leads to a personal reckoning. Realizing that his future lies with Sally, [Fintan Meyler], the Marshal chooses to leave town with her, stepping away from the chase and toward a life directed by a new, fragile partnership.

In the end, the story circles back to question the cost of justice when a town’s affection can blur the lines of truth.
