The momentum shifts when one of his robots wanders off and lands in the office of Sandy Banatoni, a buyer for Simpsons’ toy department. Seeing potential, Sandy places a large order for 1,000 units, a opportunity that could redefine Ben’s career.

Into this moment steps a smooth-talking con artist, Fred Ritter, who cleverly positions himself as the broker between Ben and Sandy. Fred’s charm helps him secure a working partnership with Ben and, crucially, he arranges the funding Ben needs through a loan shark, giving the venture a much-needed financial backbone. The two men then hire workers and set up shop in a derelict warehouse, unaware that the building sits atop a clandestine operation. Below them, thieves Saunders and Jones are attempting to tunnel into a nearby bank vault to access a coveted collection of jewels known as the Vanderveer Collection.

The criminal scheme collides with Ben’s new business when the thieves assault the makeshift shop, destroying equipment and scattering the newly hired crew. The setback jeopardizes the order for Sandy and nearly collapses everything Ben has built. But help arrives in the form of Johnny 5, a robot that had previously become sentient after a lightning strike—an invention Ben once helped bring to life.
