Shaft’s Big Score!

Private detective John Shaft is approached by his old friend Cal Asby, an insurance salesman and mortician, who seeks help because he's in trouble. Asby quickly reveals that he's in danger, prompting Shaft to respond immediately. The urgency establishes the suspense and the beginning of the investigation.

Shortly after Shaft arrives at Asby's house, a bomb detonates, killing Asby instantly. This shocking event raises questions about who targeted Asby and why. Shaft begins to investigate the circumstances surrounding his friend's murder.

The police arrive and question Shaft, but he is quickly released due to insufficient evidence. The suspicious Captain Bollin hints at deeper concerns about the case, but Shaft remains determined to uncover the truth on his own. This interaction introduces law enforcement's initial interest in Shaft.

Shaft learns that Asby's partner Johnny Kelly owes a significant gambling debt to mob boss Gus Mascola. The investigation reveals that Asby and Kelly were involved in a profitable numbers racket disguised as legitimate business, making their operations a target for organized crime.

Before Shaft and Arna, Asby's sister, can investigate further, their house is ransacked by unknown perpetrators. Kelly blocks Shaft from pursuing a suspect, raising Shaft’s suspicions and prompting him to inspect the partnership papers between Asby and Kelly. Tensions increase as motives are explored.

Bollin reveals that Asby and Kelly were running a numbers racket under the cover of their funeral and insurance businesses. concerns grow that with Asby's death, the mob will seize control of their operations, adding layers to the criminal conspiracy Shaft is uncovering.

Using intimidation, Shaft compels one of Kelly's numbers runners to disclose the location of their gambling operation. Shaft then infiltrates the headquarters, setting the stage for confrontations with the gangsters involved.

While at Kelly's operation, Shaft is seduced by Kelly's mistress Rita. Their encounter serves as a personal complication and highlights Kelly's manipulative nature. Meanwhile, Kelly faces pressure from mobster Mascola to improve his business negotiations.

Gambling boss Mascola demands to be made an equal partner in Kelly's operation, threatening to escalate violence. Kelly agrees after Mascola promises to remove Shaft, revealing Kelly’s fear of losing control over the racket and his debts.

Shaft explains to Arna that Kelly murdered Asby to gain sole control of their businesses and the $250,000, which Kelly intended to use to pay debts to Mascola. Shaft prepares to confront Kelly, suspecting him of deadly greed and treachery.

Two hitmen arrive at Shaft’s location intending to kill him, but Shaft outsmarts and kills them instead. He then takes Arna to hide at his apartment, illustrating the increasing danger and Shaft’s resilience in the face of organized crime.

Kelly offers Harlem racketeer Bumpy Jones a partnership to break away from Mascola’s control, recognizing the risk of a turf war. Bumpy accepts, demanding a large share, setting up alliances and imminent conflicts with rival gangs.

Shaft visits Mascola’s nightclub, where Kelly tries to double-cross both Mascola and Bumpy. Mascola learns Shaft has killed his men, leading to a violent confrontation. Shaft sends a message to Bumpy to solidify their alliance against their enemies.

Overhearing that Kelly has found the location of the $250,000 in a cemetery, Shaft, with Rita’s help, orchestrates a plan to recover the money. Mascola and his men also head to the site, resulting in a tense showdown.

As Kelly attempts to retrieve the money, Shaft arrives and holds the criminals hostage. After a chase involving a helicopter and a speedboat, Shaft kills Mascola, destroys the helicopter, and escapes with the money. Police arrive to find Shaft, who declines to reveal the money’s location, hinting he will donate it.
