In 1998, NYPD Detective John Shaft II (Samuel L. Jackson), a descendant of the iconic private investigator John Shaft I (played by Richard Roundtree), finds himself embroiled in a serious case involving the brutal attack on Trey Howard (Mekhi Phifer) outside a bustling restaurant. After an astute observation of Walter Wade Jr. (Christian Bale), the affluent scion of a prominent real estate family, Shaft arrests him upon discovering blood on his person. Wade claims he acted in self-defense, but Trey’s friend reveals a troubling sequence of events where Wade racially harassed Trey before the altercation. Amidst the chaos, waitress Diane Palmieri (Toni Collette) seems hesitant to provide a statement, disappearing before Shaft can secure her testimony.

As tensions rise, Wade’s arrogance becomes evident when he taunts Shaft over Trey’s death, igniting a confrontation that results in Shaft receiving suspension and subsequent transfer to another precinct. Two years later, Wade returns, and Shaft seizes the opportunity to rearrest him. While celebrating with friends, including Detective Carmen Vasquez (Vanessa Williams), Shaft is cautioned by the elder Shaft about the formidable advantages Wade’s wealth provides in navigating the justice system.

In the precinct, Wade forms an unexpected alliance with Peoples Hernandez (Jeffrey Wright), a dangerous Dominican drug lord. Despite being granted bail under the condition of relinquishing his passport, Wade’s freedom is short-lived. Frustrated by the judicial system, Shaft resigns, vowing to pursue Wade on his own terms, particularly since he suspects Wade might eliminate Diane to prevent her from testifying.

Shaft’s quest leads him to enlist the help of his friend and detective, Carmen, and a taxi driver named Rasaan (Trevor Smith Jr.). Through clever investigative work, they locate Diane, only to have her escape when she spots Shaft. Their search is complicated as they are tailed by corrupt officers Jack Roselli (Dan Hedaya) and Jimmy Groves (Ruben Santiago-Hudson), who have been bribed by Peoples.

In a daring move, Shaft and Detective Luger (Lee Tergesen) execute a plan to rob Wade of funds intended as a payoff, but Wade’s desperation forces him to submit to Peoples, becoming a distributor for high-end drugs in exchange for help in locating Diane. Meanwhile, Shaft’s operation to frame the corrupt officers backfires when they mistake Shaft’s actions for double-crossing.

As the stakes heighten, Shaft and his companions discover Diane is being shielded by her brothers, but their reunion is abruptly interrupted by an ambush from Peoples’ gang. In a fierce confrontation, Shaft eliminates several of Peoples’ men but learns the harrowing truth from Diane about her coerced silence following Trey’s murder.

The climax erupts in a dramatic showdown at Rasaan’s apartment, culminating in car crashes and gunfire across the city streets. In a tense standoff, Shaft faces off against Peoples, compelling him to release Diane before demonstrating his skill and decisiveness by ending the threat.

Wade’s trial is set to commence, but an unexpected twist occurs when Carla Howard (Lynne Thigpen), Trey’s mother, takes matters into her own hands and violently confronts Wade. Following this chaos, Shaft reaffirms his desire to transition into private detective work as he is approached by a woman seeking assistance against her abusive boyfriend, leading him again into the complexities of justice. With John Shaft I and Rasaan at his side, Shaft is prepared to confront this new challenge head-on.
