Centuries later, in the 20th century, Captain Barros Basto, who had converted to Judaism, along with approximately twenty Jewish merchants, established the Jewish Community of Oporto, located in the northern region of Portugal. This marked a significant moment in the history of Jewish presence in the country, representing a return and rebuilding of a community after a period of persecution.
