Was it magic—or murder? Myra Savage, a working‑class British housewife, reinvents herself as a medium, conducting séances in her sitting‑room with secret help from her under‑employed, asthmatic husband Billy. To boost her credibility, Myra devises a risky plan: she kidnaps the young daughter of a wealthy couple, intending to later assist the police in “finding” the missing child and prove her psychic powers.
