When Paris is liberated during World War II, the Louvre administration plans to fetch the Mona Lisa from the safety of a mountain vault in London operated by Britain’s National Gallery. Sir James Collison, C. Aubrey Smith, director of the National Gallery, works closely with his granddaughter Toni, a steady, clever presence who helps steer the plan toward a safe return. The tension isn’t merely about moving a painting; it’s about protecting a symbol that has survived war, intrigue, and the shadows of the art world. Yet a shadowy obstacle rises from within the ranks of the plot: an infamous art collector, Carl Hoffmeyer Erich von Stroheim, has his eyes set on the crown jewel.

Hoffmeyer’s scheme relies on two trusted men, Henri Georges Metaxa and Jules Victor Varconi, who pose as Louvre officials arriving to collect the painting. The plan progresses smoothly enough until Hoffmeyer, holding the real object in his hands, concludes that the masterpiece may actually be a forgery. His doubt isn’t just about authenticity; it’s a test of whether the gallery director is in on the ruse, and a quick glance at Collison’s reaction convinces Hoffmeyer that the director is not complicit.

Suspicion then shifts to Sam Todworthy Forrester Harvey, a shrewd art dealer who has warned Hoffmeyer that the painting might not be genuine. Before Hoffmeyer’s visit, a Frenchman named Anton Miran crosses paths with Sam and Emma Todworthy Doris Lloyd. Miran is connected to one of the Louvre men who originally handed Sam the real painting, and he presses for it back. Sam refuses, and in a brutal flash, Miran is killed and his body hidden as Hoffmeyer’s plan unfolds.

Desperation pushes Sam to propose a sale of the real Mona Lisa to Hoffmeyer for £100,000, but Hoffmeyer declines the offer. As soon as Hoffmeyer leaves Sam’s gallery, he orders his men to kill Sam. When Jules Balks at participating in the murder, Hoffmeyer executes him, and Jules’s body later becomes the focus of a Scotland Yard investigation that unsettles the art world and raises the stakes for everyone involved.

Sam makes a last-ditch bid to salvage the situation by attempting to sell the real Mona Lisa back to the National Gallery, presenting it to Collison. The director wavers, tempted by the idea of averting a scandal that would shock the French and the press, but Toni intervenes with a wiser counsel: contact the police. Her instinct proves correct, and the thread of the web tightens around Hoffmeyer and the truth of the painting.

Toni confides in her fiancé, Inspector Bob Cartwright from Scotland Yard Richard Fraser, who is already overseeing the murder case that touches Sam’s and Hoffmeyer’s fates. Collison, wary of exposing the painting to danger, keeps the true whereabouts of the real artwork hidden from Bob as the investigation narrows. Sam is murdered before either the police or Collison can reach him, and Collison begins to suspect Hoffmeyer of the crime. Hoffmeyer denies involvement, and the investigation stalls at a critical moment.

The tension erupts when Hoffmeyer is drawn into a confrontation at his house, where Collison tries to retrieve the painting. Hoffmeyer blocks him with a perilous display of danger, pulling a sword from his cane and forcing Collison to follow him to a study where the painting is kept. Emma Todworthy arrives on the scene and shoots Hoffmeyer in a desperate act of vengeance for Sam; Hoffmeyer responds by stabbing Emma, and both are mortally wounded. The struggle culminates as Hoffmeyer lunges toward the Mona Lisa, but Collison intervenes just in time to prevent disaster.

With the danger past, Toni and Bob arrive at the scene and secure the painting. They take it to the airport, where Professor Renault Emil Rameau, the Louvre director, is waiting to receive it. In a final twist, the fake Mona Lisa is hung on Sir James Collison’s wall while the real painting travels with them to safety. Years later, Collison sits beneath the framed replica and recounts the extraordinary adventure to his great-grandson, turning a moment of crisis into a legend that endures in the family’s memory.
