Schultze, a long-time salt miner, retires from his job in Teutschenthal, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life. With his fellow laid-off companions, Jürgen and Manfred, he navigates the challenges of having too much free time and the restlessness that comes with it.

Throughout his retirement, Schultze finds himself revisiting his passion for music, particularly the traditional polka he has played on his accordion. His fascination with American Zydeco and Cajun music grows as he experiences various life changes, igniting a desire for something more adventurous.

Schultze receives an invitation from his music club to represent them at a German folk music festival in New Braunfels, Texas. Initially hesitant, he ultimately decides to embrace this opportunity, viewing it as a chance to explore new musical horizons.

Schultze embarks on his journey to Texas, filled with excitement and trepidation. Despite his limited English skills, he is determined to connect with the local music scene and share his love for folk music.

Upon arriving at the music festival, Schultze makes an unexpected decision not to perform. Instead, he chooses to explore the beautiful Texas countryside in a motorboat, yearning for a deeper cultural experience rather than just playing music.
