In the heat and neon of 1980s Miami, Tony Montana, Al Pacino, arrives as part of the Mariel boatlift, accompanied by his friend Manny Ribera, [Steven Bauer], and their companions, Angel Pepe Serna and Chi-Chi Ángel Salazar. The city’s shimmer hides a brutal underworld, and a powerful drug lord, Frank Lopez, Robert Loggia, offers a chance to climb the ladder in exchange for carrying out a dangerous hit against a former Fidel Castro henchman. Drawn into a high-stakes deal with Colombian dealers, Tony and Angel are seized at gunpoint; Tony survives a harrowing moment, while Angel is grievously dismembered with a chainsaw. Manny and Chi-Chi manage to pull them free, and the four kill three of the dealers, delivering the drugs and the money to Frank, all while suspecting that Omar Suarez, F. Murray Abraham, may have betrayed them.

Frank hires Tony and Manny, and the two soon begin working for him. Tony’s attention is drawn to Frank’s trophy wife Elvira, Michelle Pfeiffer, whose presence both tempts and unsettles him as he starts to imagine a different future. A visit to his mother and sister Gina, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, reveals the gap between Tony’s swagger and the reality of his family’s concern. He hands his mother a lump sum, claiming it comes from political organizing, but she sees through the lie and pushes him away; Gina, however, accepts the money, and a complicated, tense dynamic develops between the siblings and their increasingly entangled lives. Manny harbors feelings for Gina, though Tony warns him to keep his distance.

A pivotal trip to Bolivia pits Tony against the cocaine kingpin Alejandro Sosa, Paul Shenar, who tests Tony with a larger, riskier deal. Omar’s fate takes a dark turn when Sosa’s men dispassionately remind Tony of Omar’s true role as a police informant, and Sosa makes clear that Frank’s judgment has faltered. Tony, who never fully trusted Omar, finds Sosa’s candor oddly reassuring, and the deal proceeds with Sosa taking a genuine liking to him. This new alliance reshapes Tony’s ambitions, and he returns to Miami with a renewed appetite for power, even as Frank’s grip on the operation begins to loosen.

Back home, Tony seizes control, breaking away from Frank, who is furious about the Bolivia venture and Omar’s death. Tony also contends with Mel Bernstein, a corrupt detective on Frank’s payroll, and an escalating sense that the police and the criminal overlords are closing in. A series of brutal choices follows: Tony assaults Gina’s liaison in a moment of possessive rage, forces Frank to confess the truth about the setup, and ultimately has Manny shoot Frank and kill Bernstein. Tony marries Elvira and expands his empire, becoming the central figure in Sosa’s distribution network while building a fortress-like estate to oversee the operation.

The heat of 1983 brings a new layer of danger as an FBI sting targets Tony for money laundering and tax evasion. Sosa proposes a grim trade: help in the murder of a journalist about to expose his governance if Tony stays out of prison. A tense restaurant dinner ends with Tony throwing accusations at Manny and condemning Elvira to leave him after she publicly denounces his criminal life. The deadly pressure mounts when Alberto the Shadow plants a bomb under the journalist’s car; Tony attempts to intervene, killing Alberto when the would-be assassination cannot be stopped, and Sosa vows revenge for the journalist’s exposé.

At his mother’s urging, Tony tracks Gina to a moment of vulnerability with Manny, and in a brutal turn, he fatally shoots Manny, only to discover Gina has just married him. Tony drags Gina to his opulent estate and descends into a brutal cocaine binge that bleeds into the siege of his fortress. Sosa’s men storm the estate, and Gina’s betrayal becomes a catalyst for tragedy as she wounds Tony, then is killed by one of Sosa’s men. In a prolonged, bloody confrontation, Tony fires with a fevered intensity, using an M16 with a grenade launcher, killing many attackers while absorbing gunshot wounds himself. As he taunts his enemies, Sosa’s enforcer, known as “The Skull,” emerges and fires a devastating shot into Tony’s back with a shotgun. Tony’s body plunges from the balcony into the pool below, beneath a statue bearing the motto, “The World Is Yours,” sealing his rise and fall in one final, fated moment.
