On 2 January 1899, a French column led by captains Voulet and Chanoine departs from French Sudan to confront Sultan Rabah in present‑day Cameroon. Their troops and African mercenaries lay waste to everything in their path. When French officials send orders and a second force, the captains murder the emissaries. Sarraounia, queen of the Aznas, learns of their brutality. Skilled in tactics and reputed witchcraft, she organizes resistance to stop the marauding officers.
