Mastr’Antonio Miciaccio, who works as both caretaker of the church and a shoemaker, is fervently devoted to Saint John the Beheaded. When the oil that sustains the saint’s candle keeps disappearing, he sets out to uncover the thief. At the same time, his stubborn opposition to his daughter’s boyfriend—whom he refuses to accept as a suitable husband—adds further conflict to his life.
