Bob Munro, a successful beverage executive, attends a company picnic where he is humiliated in front of his boss Todd by his daughter Cassie's friend Gretchen, who throws slime at Todd. Todd's dissatisfaction with Bob escalates as he seeks to acquire the Alpine Soda company in Boulder, Colorado, threatening Bob's job. The incident creates tension within the Munro family and with Todd.

Todd demands Bob to present a merger proposal in Boulder as punishment for Cassie's prank, forcing Bob to cancel their planned Hawaii vacation. Bob secretly plans a detour to Boulder in an RV to attend the meeting, concealing the true reason for the trip from his family. The family embarks on a trip with the intention of an adventurous vacation in the Rockies.

The Munro family begins their journey in the RV, encountering frequent mishaps, including navigation errors and difficulty handling the large vehicle. Bob damages the parking brake and has to use stones to secure the RV, and they deal with sewer clogs and overflowing tanks. These challenges create comedic tension and test the family's patience.

The family encounters the lively Gornicke family, who are also traveling in their own RV. Earl develops a romantic interest in Cassie, and Carl becomes fond of Moon. However, the Munros decide to leave the Gornickes after finding them too eccentric, leading to misunderstandings when they reappear later during the trip.

Bob's attempt to send the merger proposal via his laptop is thwarted when a hitchhiker steals it. He manages to send the proposal using his BlackBerry. The Gornickes recover the stolen laptop after capturing the hitchhiker and pursue the Munros to return it, showcasing a mix of chaos and sibling teamwork.

As they near Colorado, the family starts to enjoy the scenery and reconnect emotionally, leaving some disagreements behind. Bob distracts his family by feigning illness to attend the Boulder meeting alone, highlighting his desperation to fulfill his goal without causing alarm or disappointment.

Bob successfully presents the merger to Alpine Soda's staff, but he is asked to speak again the next day. Rushing to the meeting in the RV, Bob navigates a treacherous trail and becomes stuck on a boulder, risking the entire trip. He eventually dislodges the RV, demonstrating his determination and resourcefulness.

During a second attempt to get to the meeting, the RV's brakes fail, causing it to roll into a lake. Bob admits to his family that their trip was primarily for his job, which upsets them. Bob retrieves a bicycle from the lake and pedals to the company headquarters, seeking redemption and demonstrating his commitment.

Bob arrives at the second meeting just in time, starts his presentation, but then has an epiphany and advises against the merger, fearing Todd's selfish motives will harm the company. Carl confronts Todd physically, and Bob's stance leads to his firing, but he chooses to quit, standing up for his principles.

After being fired, Bob retrieves the waterlogged RV from the lake. The family begins to mend their relationships as Bob realizes the importance of family over work. The ending shows the family enjoying togetherness, and Bob being offered a new job by the Alpine Soda owners, who want to remain independent.

During the closing scenes, the RV's parking brake fails again, causing it to roll backward and collide with police and company cars. This comedic climax emphasizes the ongoing chaos and unpredictability of their family adventures, wrapping up the story with a humorous touch.
