Roohi (2021) Spoiler-Free Summary – What It's About

In a remote North Indian town where age‑old customs dictate that a girl may be taken by the man who wishes to marry her, an uneasy blend of folklore and everyday life permeates the air. The community’s rituals coexist with whispered legends about a fearsome spirit whose feet point backward, a presence that has long haunted the surrounding forests and quiet streets alike.

Enter Bhawra Pandey, a pragmatic young man accustomed to the gritty realities of his village, and his loyal companion Kattanni Qureshi, whose wit often masks a deeper curiosity. Both are summoned by their enigmatic employer, Guniya Bhai, to carry out a delicate assignment: to secure the elusive Roohi for a client with a very personal agenda. Their mission feels routine at first, yet the trio’s journey quickly drifts into the wild, where the boundaries between duty and superstition begin to blur.

Roohi herself is a striking figure—unwillingly thrust into the middle of a pact that seems to echo the town’s traditional practices, yet something unmistakably otherworldly clings to her. Locals speak of a Mudiyapairi, a witch‑like entity whose backward‑turned feet signal a power that refuses to be ignored. As the three find themselves isolated within a forested hideaway, the uneasy sensation that an unseen force watches them intensifies, hinting at a deeper, uncanny connection between Roohi and the ancient legend.

The interplay among the characters sets the tone for a story that balances dark humor with palpable suspense. Bhawra wrestles with an unexpected protectiveness, while Kattanni is drawn to the mysterious allure of the spirit that calls itself Afza. Amidst the looming presence of Guniya Bhai and the shadow of the backward‑footed witch, the film weaves a haunting atmosphere that invites the audience to question what is real, what is ritual, and what lingers just beyond the edge of the forest’s darkness.
