Shorty is introduced as a bitter man who is kicked out of a nightclub after clashing with a couple. He heads to a nearby bar owned by Al, a wary host who isn’t sure he wants Shorty lingering around.
A talent agent, Sir Bop, has persuaded Al to let his client, Julie, audition as a singer. Inside the bar, Steve, a journalist hunting for a story, adds a buzz of tension to the room. Julie’s nerves show in a tentative audition, her voice wavering as she stumbles through a song, underscoring the uncertain mood that grips the bar.
Angie, a truck driver, arrives with his girlfriend Mabel. Angie tries to provoke Shorty into a fight, but Shorty responds with a knife, escalating the danger in the room. The bar fills with more characters: [Lester], a boxer, along with his partner Syl and their manager Marty enter the scene, followed by two hoodlums, Jigger and Joey, and a gangster named Jerry who pressures Al for protection money and has a keen interest in Julie.
Sir Bop leaves, and the tension erupts as Shorty clashes with Jerry. A fresh witness arrives in the form of Pete, who reports that a nearby grocery store has been robbed and its two owners killed. Pete recognizes Jigger and Jerry as the culprits, and the confrontation quickly spirals into a siege when Jigger fires and Pete is killed. The bar is suddenly cut off from the outside world, and the atmosphere shifts from a crowded club to a tense standoff.
To maintain the illusion of calm, Jigger forces Julie to sing, hoping the show must go on and that the danger remains hidden for the moment. The police soon determine that both Jigger and Joey are inside the building and threaten to storm the bar. In a tense motion, Shorty talks Jigger down, disarms Joey, and arranges a surrender, turning the dangerous standoff toward a fragile resolution.
Meanwhile, The Kid decides to quit boxing, marking a personal turning point amid the chaos. The police arrest Jerry for extortion, and the night closes with Julie telling Sir Bop that she intends to quit singing. In a final, hopeful pause, Shorty invites Julie to accompany him to the movies to see King Kong, offering a quiet counterpoint to the day’s violence.
