Revolt of the Zombies

The Oriental priest, who served as chaplain of a French colonial regiment, was condemned to life imprisonment because he possessed the supernatural power to turn men into zombies. His ability to create an army of obedient undead made him a dangerous threat to the colonial powers, leading to his capture and imprisonment on the Franco-Austrian frontier.

General Mazovia killed the priest to seize the partially burned parchment that contained the location of the secret formula for creating zombies. Rather than allowing the priest to destroy the parchment, Mazovia murdered him and took the document, planning to use the information to locate and obtain the zombie-making formula for his own purposes.

The priest's earlier attempt to burn the parchment establishes that the knowledge within was meant to be kept secret.

Armand broke his engagement to Claire after she sought comfort with Clifford following an accident. Although Armand loved Claire, he recognized that her heart truly belonged to Clifford. By ending the engagement, he freed her to marry the man she actually loved rather than continuing a relationship built on rivalry rather than genuine affection.

The love triangle was established early when Claire agreed to marry Armand to spite Clifford, whom she truly loved.

Striking the gong revealed a hidden panel containing a metal tablet with an inscription. Upon translating it, Armand realized he had discovered the long-sought secret formula, and remarkably, he alone seemed to possess the power to create zombies.

The expedition's entire purpose was to find and destroy this secret, making Armand's discovery the climax of their quest.

With no workers willing to continue, the expedition could not sustain its operations near Angkor and was forced to retreat to Phnom Penh. This setback gave Mazovia greater control over the expedition's direction.
