Relics

The film begins with a house flooding due to an overflowing tub on Christmas night. Water seepes downstairs, revealing an elderly woman named Edna in a trance and an ominous figure stirring in the shadows. This sets the tone for the mysterious and sinister events to come.

Kay and her daughter Sam arrive at Edna's house after being alerted that Edna has been missing for days. They find the house in disrepair, with new locks, clutter, mold, and mysterious post-it notes. It suggests Edna’s memory and mental state are deteriorating, possibly due to dementia.

Sam experiences a creepy breathing sensation in a walk-in closet, and Kay dreams of a cabin in the woods where her mother sits alone. Kay also finds a sketchbook containing drawings of the cabin, connected to Kay’s family history. Edna’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic.

Edna appears physically healthy aside from a large black mark on her chest. The doctor advises Kay and Sam to monitor her, and Kay begins to consider moving her mother into an assisted living facility to manage her worsening condition. Edna gives Sam a family heirloom ring.

Edna forgets recent memories, accuses Sam of theft, and exhibits violent behavior, including attacking Sam and talking to herself. She also expresses fears of an intruding presence coming through the closet, which worsens her paranoia.

The neighbor shares that Edna played hide and seek with his son and locked him in the walk-in closet for hours, causing the boy to scream for help. This reveals Edna’s history of troubling behavior and hints at the house’s dark past.

In the woods, Edna tries to eat photographs and bury family albums, believing it will protect memories from the malevolent entity. Kay tearfully urges her mother to come and stay with her instead of staying isolated.

Sam finds a hidden hallway behind a pile of belongings that leads to a labyrinth within the house. As she ventures deeper, the house appears to change and trap her, with ominous post-it notes suggesting Edna’s disappearance into this maze.

Edna, showing signs of possession, peels off her skin revealing a black, demon-like dermis. She attacks Kay and Sam violently, indicating her transformation from dementia to a malevolent entity, possibly linked to the house’s dark history.

Kay fights the demonic Edna, ultimately defeating her by removing her remaining human skin. She buries Edna’s disfigured body, signaling an attempt to end the possession and rescue her family from its influence.

As Kay and Sam escape, Kay notices a small black mark on her own back, mirroring the mark on Edna. The film ends with the cabin window from Kay’s dream covered in black mold, suggesting the curse or influence will continue.
