In the film’s closing moments John Diman finally confronts the mysterious Serpentik. After a frantic chase through the cliffs, the woman’s car loses control, tumbles over the edge and—against the comic‑book lore that says she always survives—she slips into John’s vehicle. Inside, she removes her mask, though her hair still conceals her face, and presses the poison‑tipped “cobra‑kiss” ring against the back of his neck. The toxin works instantly; John watches the waves crash beneath him as the car erupts in flames.

The scene then shifts to the beach where John, already a fixture of the Riviera with his daily cosmopolitan, is shown seated in his chair, drink in hand. In a few breathless seconds he appears to die peacefully, the sea swallowing his last breath. The beach setting suddenly dissolves, revealing what looks like a studio set, and the final frame lingers on the idea that everything he experienced might have been a filmed illusion.

Thus the ending leaves us with two intertwined possibilities: either John truly fell victim to Serpentik’s lethal kiss, his life ending in a cinematic‑style tableau, or he was merely a pawn in a larger “film‑within‑a‑film” trick, his reality fabricated until the words The End roll. The movie refuses to decide which is true, keeping the audience guessing whether John Diman was ever a real spy, a forgotten actor, or simply a fantasy projected onto the silver screen.
