Set in the summer of 1943 in Piedmont, Italy, this story follows Milton, who is captivated by Fulvia, a woman who enjoys playing with his affections. She seems to value his intellect and the letters he writes more than his feelings. A year later, Milton joins the Italian Resistance, fighting alongside fellow partisans. He discovers that Fulvia harbored a secret love for Giorgio, his closest friend and also a partisan. Determined to confront Giorgio, Milton journeys into the misty hills of the Langhe region, only to find that Giorgio has been arrested by the Fascists.
