In 1964, we meet Jimmy Cooper, a young Mod from London struggling with disillusionment in his life. His days are filled with monotonous parental conflicts and a dull job at an advertising agency, lacking any real excitement or purpose.

To escape his uninspired life, Jimmy immerses himself in the vibrant Mod culture, indulging in amphetamines and spirited scooter rides. He frequently engages in confrontations with the rival Rockers gang alongside his close friends.

The conflict escalates when the Rockers violently attack Jimmy's friend Spider. This incident ignites a desire for revenge among Jimmy and his friends, drawing them deeper into the cycle of violence and crime.

As tensions rise, Jimmy begins to grapple with his feelings about the violence surrounding him. After a retaliatory act targeting Kevin, a childhood friend, he experiences a moment of clarity and rides away in frustration, rejecting the violence.

The tension between the Mods and Rockers culminates during a bank holiday weekend in Brighton, where they plan to assert their dominance. Jimmy sees this as an opportunity to elevate his status and impress the girl he likes, Steph.

While trying to connect with Steph, Jimmy faces heartbreak when she chooses Pete, a wealthy older Mod, over him. This rejection intensifies Jimmy's feelings of inadequacy and pushes him further away from his friends.

In their attempt to score drugs for the Brighton trip, Jimmy and his friends are cheated by a gangster, leading them to a fit of rage. They vandalize the gangsters' property and resort to robbing a pharmacy for their desired amphetamines.

Upon arriving in Brighton, Jimmy feels renewed energy from an early morning scooter ride. He encounters a charismatic scooterist dubbed 'Ace Face' and seeks to impress Steph with an unscripted dance, only to find himself outcasts by bouncers.

As tensions explode into violence between the Mods and Rockers, the chaotic scene is interrupted by police intervention. During the turmoil, Jimmy and Steph share a passionate moment in an alley, providing a brief escape from the surrounding chaos.

After the skirmish, Jimmy finds himself arrested alongside Ace Face. The experience leads him back to London, where he faces the harsh realities of his life and plunges into depression following the vibrant chaos of Brighton.

Back in London, Jimmy's life spirals further as his mother discovers his stash of amphetamines and kicks him out. Simultaneously, he resigns from his job and squanders his severance pay, compounding his downward spiral.

In a moment of painful discovery, Jimmy learns that Steph is now dating Dave, his close friend. A confrontation ensues, filled with anger and jealousy, illustrating the fractures developing within his social circle.

As his emotional state deteriorates further, Jimmy's beloved Lambretta scooter becomes a casualty of a postal van accident. This incident darkens his mood, leading him to a state of greater despair.

In his desperation, Jimmy returns to Brighton, consuming larger quantities of pills as he slips further into an emotional crisis. Haunted by his memories and encounters, he grapples with the remnants of his past.

In a reckless moment, Jimmy confronts the reality of his idol, Ace Face, reduced to a mere bellboy. This stark realization leads him to steal Ace's Vespa and ride perilously near the cliffs, culminating in his scooter's dramatic fall over the edge.
