Pluto awakens to the cheerful sounds of two birds singing outside his doghouse. Eager to join in, he attempts to sing along, but his voice doesn’t quite match theirs, and the birds, clearly annoyed, fly away in frustration. Not discouraged, Pluto continues to imitate the buzzing of a bee and the chirping of a cricket, but his efforts only succeed in annoying them further; the bee quickly hides inside the flower it was perched on, and the cricket hops into a nearby hole, seeking shelter.
As Pluto explores his vocal talents, he suddenly hears a lively radio playing from a nearby music store. Curious and excited, he discovers that he can emulate the sound of the radio by pounding his tail on the ground, which produces a rhythmic beat that feels surprisingly satisfying to him. Just as he begins to enjoy his new talent, the store proprietor, [John Woodbury], turns off the radio and takes it inside the shop. Determined, Pluto tries to sneak into the store to continue playing with the radio. He carefully tiptoes inside and, at one point, has to hide when he notices the proprietor approaching.
Eventually, the proprietor places an “Out to Lunch” sign on the door and leaves, closing it behind him. This gives Pluto a perfect opportunity to explore further. He approaches the now unguarded radio, but when he switches it on, no music plays — only static. Undeterred, Pluto instinctively turns on a nearby record player and makes an astonishing discovery: his tail can function like a record player’s stylus, and when he presses his tail against the spinning records, music flows from his mouth, creating a unique sound.
Fascinated by this new discovery, Pluto takes the record player back to his doghouse so he can make music whenever he wants. As he plays a song, Pluto mimics the singing voice on the record, singing along convincingly. His playful performance catches the attention of several female dogs, Fifi and Dinah among them, as well as the birds, bee, and cricket he previously annoyed. All are captivated and impressed by Pluto’s singing talent, and they gather around to watch his performance.
In a humorous turn, Pluto’s tail slips out of the record player just before finishing the song. This causes the music to get stuck, but Pluto quickly places his tail back in position, finishing the song with a flourish. The wonderful, unexpected performance leaves the female dogs fainting from happiness and surprise, while the birds, bee, and cricket watch in awe.
Throughout the film, Pluto’s playful determination and inventive spirit shine as he experiments with different sounds and discovers his own unique way to enjoy music and entertain himself and others. This charming short highlights themes of curiosity, ingenuity, and the joy of making music, capturing the lovable character of Pluto in a whimsical, light-hearted adventure.
