What Happens in Planet Single: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Planet Single (2016) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Ania, played by Agnieszka Więdłocha, is a 27-year-old single woman working as a music teacher at an elementary school. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she decides to try online dating, but her first experience is a failure when her date, known as "Ant_Man," fails to show up. While waiting, she is noticed by Maciej Stuhr as Tomek Wilczyński, a highly successful TV host and puppeteer. Being accustomed to immense popularity with women, Tomek views Ania's vulnerability as an easy opportunity for conquest. He attempts to use her unfortunate situation to manipulate her into sleeping with him, but Ania is completely unimpressed by his brusque demeanor. She firmly informs him that she expects knightly behavior from any man who wishes to pursue her.

Driven by a mix of ego and inspiration, Tomek creates a puppet named "Hania" for his television show, designing her to look exactly like Ania. He uses the character to mock Ania's beliefs and personality. The sketches become an overnight sensation, leading the network to move the show to a primetime slot. This sudden shift in the show's direction leads to the replacement of Piotr Głowacki as Marcel Galiński, the show's producer and a longtime friend of Tomek.

Needing more material for the "Hania" segments, Tomek tracks down Ania and proposes a business arrangement: if she continues to go on online dates and provides him with the stories, he will donate a brand new piano to her school. Ania agrees and begins using the dating app "Planet Single". While the sketches are a hit, Ania forms a genuine connection with a user named "Bitter-Sweet." They share friendly conversations, though "Bitter-Sweet" refuses to meet in person, insisting that they only chat for the time being. Meanwhile, Ania's relationship with her estranged mother, Danuta Stenka as Krystyna Kwiatkowska, remains strained, as Krystyna strongly disapproves of her daughter's online dating habits.

The plot thickens when "Ant_Man," whose real name is Michał Czernecki as Antonio, reaches out to ask for a second chance. Ania agrees to meet him and finds herself genuinely liking him. Antonio explains the reason for his initial disappearance: he has been a widower for several months and was caring for his daughter. When Ania mentions Antonio to Tomek, the latter—who has unknowingly begun falling in love with her—becomes jealous. He convinces himself that Antonio is a manipulator and that his tragic backstory is far-fetched.

In a desperate attempt to "save" Ania, Tomek and Marcel track down a woman they believe to be Antonio's wife. They interrupt a second date between Ania and Antonio, with Tomek recording the entire event and loudly accusing Antonio of being a cheater. However, the plan backfires spectacularly when it is revealed that the woman is actually Antonio's sister. Heartbroken and disgusted by Tomek's cruelty, Antonio leaves. Ania is furious, scolding Tomek and declaring that she never wants to see him again. Disillusioned by Tomek's behavior, Marcel resigns from his position.

Shortly after, Antonio visits Ania to tell her that he cannot continue dating her; the chaos caused by Tomek made him realize he is not yet emotionally ready for a new serious relationship. They part ways on friendly terms.

As the final episode of the show approaches, Tomek is horrified to realize that the recording of the disastrous date is scheduled to air. Seeking redemption, he enlists the help of Marcel to hijack the broadcast. Instead of the embarrassing footage, Tomek airs a montage showing that several of "Hania's" past dates actually found love because of their failed experiences with her. Tomek delivers a heartfelt speech, praising "Hania" for being brave, honest, and confident—qualities he admits he lacks. He describes her as an everyday hero and warns the audience against ending up lonely as he did.

This public confession moves Krystyna, who finally reconnects with Ania. At home, Ania sees that "Bitter-Sweet" has been trying to reach her and agrees to a date. To her surprise, "Bitter-Sweet" is revealed to be Tomek, who arrives dressed in full knight's armor. He confesses his love for her, and the two share a romantic kiss.

Parallel to this, the story follows Weronika Książkiewicz as Ola, a hairdresser and close friend of Ania. Ola is fired from her job after ignoring her customers' requests to impose her own "professional" vision on their hair. Her boyfriend, Tomasz Karolak as Bogdan, the director of Ania's school, is frustrated by Ola's lack of discipline. Adding to the tension is Joanna Jarmołowicz as Zośka, Bogdan's daughter, who hates Ola and blames her for the departure of Bogdan's wife.

Ania discovers that Bogdan has a profile on "Planet Single", leading Ola to believe he is cheating. To catch him, Ola creates her own fake profile and begins chatting with "Bogdan." However, it is revealed that the profile was actually created by Zośka to manipulate the couple into breaking up. Bogdan, seeing Ola's fake profile, assumes she is the one cheating. This culminates in a loud, public argument when Bogdan follows Ola to a fake date. Zośka records the breakup and posts it online, and Ola moves out of the apartment.

Eventually, the guilt consumes Zośka. She realizes the damage she has caused and visits Ola to confess the truth about the fake profiles. While Ola initially refuses to return to Bogdan, realizing they may not be compatible, a series of events—including a coincidence involving one of Hania's former dates and a moment where Zośka accidentally calls Ola "mom"—softens her heart. This leads Bogdan to contact Ola once more, and the three eventually reunite as a family.

Planet Single Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Planet Single (2016): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Tomek create the puppet "Hania" based on Ania?

Tomek was inspired after Ania firmly rejected his advances during their first meeting, insisting that any man who wanted her must behave like a knight. In Planet Single, he turned her personality and romantic ideals into a puppet sketch to mock her on his show, never expecting that the character would become an overnight ratings sensation and move the program to primetime.

Foreshadowing: Ania's very first line to Tomek about "knightly behavior" becomes the emotional core of the entire film and is literally fulfilled in the final scene.

Q2

What was the deal between Tomek and Ania, and why did she accept it?

After the "Hania" sketches exploded in popularity, Tomek needed fresh material and tracked Ania down. He offered to donate a brand new piano to her elementary school in exchange for her continuing to go on real dates through the "Planet Single" app and reporting back with stories for his show. Ania, a dedicated music teacher, agreed because the piano would directly benefit her students, even though she did not yet realize she was being used as a creative resource.

Q3

Why did Tomek sabotage Ania's date with Antonio?

Tomek had unknowingly begun falling for Ania and felt threatened when she mentioned genuinely liking Antonio. Convinced that Antonio's widower backstory was a manipulation, Tomek and producer Marcel tracked down a woman they believed to be Antonio's wife and publicly interrupted the date on camera to expose him as a cheater. The plan backfired when the woman turned out to be Antonio's sister, and Tomek's jealousy destroyed the only real relationship Ania had on the app.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Tomek dismisses Antonio's widower story as "far-fetched," which signals his growing jealousy before the sabotage actually happens.

Q4

Who is "Bitter-Sweet" in Planet Single?

"Bitter-Sweet" is revealed to be Tomek himself, who had secretly been chatting with Ania on the dating app the entire time they were working together. In the final scene, he shows up at her door dressed in full knight's armor, fulfilling the very first demand she ever made of him, and confesses that he is the man behind the account and that he has fallen in love with her.

Foreshadowing: Bitter-Sweet is the only user who refuses to meet in person, a detail that retroactively hints he was hiding his public identity as a TV celebrity.

Q5

Why did Antonio stop dating Ania even though they liked each other?

Although Antonio genuinely liked Ania, the chaos and public humiliation caused by Tomek's sabotage forced him to confront his emotional state. In Planet Single, he admits that the incident made him realize he was still grieving his late wife and not ready to commit to a new serious relationship. He and Ania part ways on friendly terms, which closes that storyline but leaves her open to the eventual reveal of Bitter-Sweet's identity.

Q6

What was the meaning behind Tomek's final speech on his show?

During the hijacked finale of his show, Tomek aired a montage showing that several of "Hania's" past dates had actually found real love because of their failed encounters with her. He then publicly praised "Hania" as brave, honest, and confident, qualities he admitted he personally lacked, and warned the audience not to end up as lonely and emotionally closed off as he had been. The speech functions as Tomek's public redemption, an apology he could not deliver to Ania directly, and the moment that finally softens her estranged mother.

Foreshadowing: The show's success was always built on Tomek mocking Ania, so the final episode inverts that dynamic by having him publicly celebrate her instead.

Q7

Why was Marcel replaced as the show's producer?

Once the "Hania" puppet sketches became a primetime hit, the network restructured the show around Tomek's new creative direction, which included moving it to a more prestigious time slot. Marcel, who had been Tomek's longtime producer and friend, was let go as part of that restructuring in Planet Single, a decision that becomes important later when Marcel helps Tomek hijack the finale broadcast.

Q8

Why did Zośka create fake profiles to break up Ola and Bogdan?

Zośka, Bogdan's teenage daughter, openly despised Ola and blamed her for her mother's departure from the family. In Planet Single, she secretly created a fake "Planet Single" profile under Bogdan's name to make him appear unfaithful, then used a second fake account to lure Ola into responding. The trap worked on both sides, convincing each parent that the other was cheating and ultimately causing a public, viral breakup.

Foreshadowing: Earlier scenes show Zośka expressing overt hostility toward Ola, hinting that her resentment goes deeper than typical teenage dislike.

  • zoska fake profiles
  • planet single
  • ola bogdan breakup
  • family sabotage
Q9

Why did Ola initially refuse to return to Bogdan after Zośka's confession?

After Zośka admitted to the fake profiles, Ola did not automatically go back to Bogdan because the damage went deeper than the prank itself. In Planet Single, Ola realized that Zośka's hatred reflected a real compatibility problem, and she doubted whether she could ever be a good stepmother to a child who resented her so strongly. Only later, after a series of small events including Zośka accidentally calling her "mom," did she reconsider the relationship.

Foreshadowing: Ola had already been fired for imposing her own vision on others, a flaw that mirrors her difficulty accepting a family dynamic that does not naturally include her.

Q10

How did Ania reconcile with her estranged mother?

Krystyna, who had strongly disapproved of her daughter's online dating, happened to see Tomek's final televised speech praising the puppet "Hania" for being brave, honest, and confident in her search for love. The message resonated with Krystyna enough that she finally reached out to Ania, repairing the relationship that had been strained throughout the film.

Foreshadowing: Krystyna's disapproval is shown early as a consistent pressure on Ania, so her sudden change of heart is tied directly to Tomek's public confession.

  • ania mother
  • krystyna
  • reconciliation
  • planet single
  • family repair
Q11

Why did Tomek arrive dressed in knight's armor at the end of Planet Single?

The knight costume is a direct callback to Ania's very first line to Tomek, when she rejected his brash approach and told him that any man who wanted to court her had to behave like a knight. After months of falling for her, Tomek used the armor to literally fulfill that original demand and deliver his love confession in a way she would never forget, turning a throwaway demand into the emotional payoff of the entire film.

Foreshadowing: Ania's line about "knightly behavior" in the opening scene is repeated almost word-for-word when Tomek finally arrives at her door.
