Picnic at Hanging Rock

In the summer of 1900, the windswept cliffs of Victoria cradle the secluded world of Appleyard College, a prestigious girls’ school where propriety and discipline are woven into daily life. The headmistress, a figure of stern elegance, permits a rare indulgence for her charge: a Valentine’s Day picnic at the legendary Hanging Rock. The promise of open sky and untouched landscape offers the students a fleeting taste of freedom, a moment when the rigid walls of the institution seem to recede beneath the ancient stone and the rustling eucalyptus.

Among the girls, Miranda and Marion radiate a daring spirit, while Irma balances curiosity with an inner melancholy; their mathematics teacher, Miss McCraw, watches over them with a blend of academic rigor and quiet compassion. Other figures—Miss Lumley, the strict supervisor of posture; Mrs. Appleyard, the resolute headmistress; and Mlle. de Poitiers, the cultured governess—populate the school’s hierarchy, each embodying a facet of the era’s expectations.
