Hèdre, queen, loves Theseus’s son Hippolytus and scorns her husband. She hides the passion with feigned hatred, but guilt forces confession when she learns of the king’s death. Hippolytus does not love her. Ashamed, she turns to Oenone, who blames Hippolytus to protect her. Theseus brings divine wrath on Hippolytus, and the queen ends her life.
