Americans, inundated with news, have long turned to escapist entertainment—from dime‑store novels to the “funny papers,” daily comic strips in newspapers. Originating in the late 19th century, classics such as The Yellow Kid, Little Nemo, Happy Hooligan, The Katzenjammer Kids, Mutt & Jeff and Bringing Up Father reached readers of all ages and classes. Cartoonists either create new heroes or inherit legacy strips, offering absurd, fantastical or poignantly realistic stories limited only by imagination.
