Police Lt. Joseph Petrosino Ernest Borgnine is a rookie in the New York City police force who dares to push for a bold plan: form a dedicated squad to attack the Black Hand on its own turf. This mission hinges on far more than brute force; it requires fluency in Italian, a deep understanding of immigrant neighborhoods, and the stubborn belief that the tenements’ everyday people deserve protection from criminals who present themselves as heroes. The campaign opens against Lupo Miano Barry Russo, a prominent extortionist, but it quickly becomes clear that the trouble runs deeper than a single gang. Petrosino’s efforts uncover a wider network and a stubborn resistance to justice that tests his resolve at every turn.

Beyond the badge and the briefing rooms, a personal thread threads through his work. Adelina Saulino Zohra Lampert, the daughter of a family he once aided, finds herself drawn to him in a way that shakes his carefully measured world. Their bond grows, and they eventually marry, adding a private stake to his dangerous public crusade. The personal and the professional paths intertwine as the danger intensifies and the line between ally and foe grows increasingly blurred.

The Black Hand’s reach comes to a dramatic head when they target Enrico Caruso Howard Caine, the legendary opera singer. Petrosino steps in as Caruso’s personal protector, a role that puts him in the center of a ticking clock. After a nocturnal performance, a bomb is concealed in Caruso’s car, and tragedy nearly strikes—though a forgotten hat saves the singer and a chauffeur is killed. Zarillo communicates by mail, entrusting the capable Johnny Viscardi Alan Austin to carry on should misfortune strike. The discovery of a transatlantic criminal web pushes Petrosino’s quest to the brink.

Just as Petrosino is poised to return to New York, a traitorous informant draws him into a perilous meeting. The informant reveals himself as the head of the Sicilian mafia, and Petrosino steps away, only to be shot down in the street. The moment marks a fatal blow to the detective’s campaign, but the story does not end there. In a quiet, somber scene at the funeral home, Viscardi notices a chilling detail: Zarillo spits into Petrosino’s coffin, a signal that sets in motion one last, decisive progression toward future justice.
