Based on a true story, this drama unfolds in a modern rural village in Theni, in south India, where caste-driven communal riots flare up and threaten everyday life. At the center is Vijay Yesudas as Muneeshwaran, a young, jobless man who drifts through the village with a circle of like-minded friends, his days lacking purpose or direction.
One day, while accompanying an elderly woman to the police station, he discovers a striking reality: the locals hold cops in high regard, drawn by the promise of easy money and free liquor. This moment reshapes his view of authority and power, fueling a latent ambition. Before he leaves, he makes a pledge to his childhood sweetheart Malar Amritha Aiyer that he will complete the police training and marry her, a vow that sets his life on a new trajectory.
Muneeshwaran’s ascent is shepherded by his uncle Krishnan [Bharathiraja], a retired army officer who uses his influence to secure him a position in the police by bribing higher officials. The path to the training camp proves grueling and emotionally draining; he even runs away, but his seniors catch up with him and bring him back. Ultimately, he endures the rigors of training and earns his police officer’s badge, a turning point that distances him from his old life even as it binds him to a new duty.
While Muneesh is away at camp, tragedy strikes back home. His widowed cousin is killed by relatives after her love across caste—an alliance planned with a young man from a rival caste—becomes known. The man is murdered as well, and the violent retaliation that follows ignites a full-blown caste war, tearing the community apart and forcing hard choices upon everyone caught in the conflict.
As a new officer in his own village, Muneesh is tasked with quelling the riots, which are stoked by one of his own uncles. He faces a stark choice between loyalty to his duties and loyalty to his caste. He ultimately decides to stand with justice, joining forces with his superior Selvam Akhil to arrest all those responsible, including his own uncle and cousins. Yet, the system proves unreliable—those arrested are released on bail, underscoring the fragility of the fight against entrenched anger and vendetta.
The clash reaches a ceremonial peak around the temple festival, where leaders of the rival clans vow peace to allow the celebrations to proceed. Muneesh attends the festival to maintain calm and prevent any flare-ups by his uncles from reigniting violence. But the fragile truce cracks in a devastating moment: petrol is thrown on Muneesh and he is set ablaze. Krishnan and Malar rush to help him, only to be thwarted by fellow villagers who feel Muneesh has betrayed their clan. In a harrowing final act, the burning Muneesh embraces his own uncle, the head of the caste gang, and both men die in the flames. The aftermath shows a grieving Krishnan erecting a memorial stone at Muneesh’s burial site, a somber reminder of the cost of vengeance and the fragile line between duty and loyalty.
