Over the Moon

The film begins with Ma Ma narrating a story about a giant space dog that eats the moon, explaining its phases, and the legend of the moon goddess Chang’e. She shares the story of Chang’e’s love, her ascent to the moon, and her lonely life with Jade Rabbit. This establishes the cultural and mythological background for the story that influences Fei Fei’s imagination.

Fei Fei, as a young girl, receives a gift bunny named Bungee from her Ma Ma. When Ma Ma falls ill and eventually passes away, Fei Fei is devastated and becomes more focused on the moon, inspired by her mother's stories. These events deeply impact her emotional state and her fascination with the moon.

Four years later, Fei Fei is a diligent student helping at her family’s shop that sells mooncakes, a popular treat during the Moon Festival. Her father Ba Ba is seen starting to see someone new, Mrs. Zhong, which makes Fei Fei realize he is moving on from Ma Ma. The family gathers for dinner, and Fei Fei reacts upset when her beliefs in the myth of Chang’e clash with her relatives’ dismissals.

Inspired by the legend, Fei Fei designs and constructs a rocket to fly to the moon, motivated by her desire to reunite her father with her mother. She builds prototypes and finally succeeds in creating a magnetically levitating rocket, symbolizing her determination and hope to find Chang’e and prove her mother’s story true.

Fei Fei and her bunny Bungee launch the rocket towards the moon, but it falters when Chin, Mrs. Zhong’s son, stows away, adding extra weight. The rocket crashes onto the moon’s surface, where Fei Fei and Chin are rescued by flying lion creatures and taken to Lunaria, the moon kingdom.

Fei Fei meets Chang’e, who performs an extravagant entrance. Chang’e initially appears vain and self-absorbed, contrary to Fei Fei’s expectations. Chang’e believes Fei Fei is seeking the gift that will allow her to see Houyi again and offers to give her a photo if she returns with a special gift.

Chin tries to prove himself to Fei Fei by negotiating with Chang’e for the photo, leading to a ping pong match where he confronts her about her selfishness. Despite his efforts, Chang’e refuses to give the photo, seeing him as a potential brother but feeling conflicted about her own loneliness.

Fei Fei and the chickens search for the missing gift near a crash site and encounter a moon dog named Gobi. They find a doll of Chang’e and a piece of an amulet, which eventually leads Fei Fei to realize it’s her mother’s gift. Meanwhile, Chang’e struggles with her loneliness and despair, feeling abandoned and wishing to reunite with Houyi.

With the help of the amulet, Chang’e is reunited with Houyi temporarily, and they share a heartfelt moment. Houyi advises her to move on and find happiness, which causes her deep sadness and darkness to envelop Lunaria. Fei Fei comforts her and encourages her to find love again.

Chang’e finds peace and prepares to say goodbye. She gives Fei Fei the photo, which gets burned upon re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, symbolizing that memories remain even if the object is gone. Fei Fei and Chin return to Earth, with Ba Ba watching them, indicating the beginning of a new chapter for their family.

Later, Ba Ba marries Mrs. Zhong, and the family celebrates the Moon Festival together. Outside, Fei Fei notices a crane, suggesting Chang’e’s subtle visit, and she smiles, symbolizing hope and ongoing connection. Fei Fei begins to accept new family members and the changes in her life.
