Over the Moon in Love

Fei Fei is told the legend of the Moon goddess Chang'e during preparations for the Moon Festival. The tale plants the belief that Chang'e might be real, a conviction Fei Fei holds four years after her mother's death. The Moon Festival atmosphere amplifies her curiosity and longing.

Fei Fei's mother falls ill, leaving the family strained as Fei Fei clings to memory and hope. She gives Fei Fei a white rabbit named Bungee as a keepsake. Fei Fei's mother dies when Fei Fei is seven, shaping her world and questions about the Moon goddess.

Now eleven, Fei Fei learns her father is engaged to Mrs. Zhong and resents the idea of a new family dynamic. She is especially annoyed by Chin, Mrs. Zhong's energetic eight-year-old son. The Moon Festival looms, intensifying her struggle to hold onto her mother's memory.

Inspired by a crane and the Moon Festival, Fei Fei designs a rocket shaped like a rabbit lantern to prove Chang'e is real. The craft uses fireworks to boost its speed, nodding to traditional paper-lantern aesthetics. Chin secretly sneaks aboard, setting up the moment of disaster that follows.

As the rocket launches, a mystical beam of energy pulls Fei Fei and Chin toward the Moon. Their journey escapes ordinary physics and ends with them being carried toward Lunaria, leaving Earth behind. The mood shifts from excitement to awe as they approach the lunar realm.

Two friendly winged guardian lions rescue Fei Fei and Chin after their crash-landing. The guardians lead them into Lunaria, where Fei Fei meets Chang'e and the Lunarians for the first time. Fei Fei processes the wonder of this new world and its inhabitants.

Chang'e explains she was supposed to deliver a gift to Houyi and asks Fei Fei to bring it. Fei Fei takes a photo with Chang'e to prove she is real, but Chang'e confiscates the photo. She declares a competition to find the gift before the last moondust falls.

Chin is captured by Chang'e while searching for the gift, locked away in a chamber. Chang'e challenges Chin to a game of ping pong to reveal the gift's location, and Chin wins, further upsetting her. The stakes of the quest become personal and emotional.

Fei Fei leaves Chin behind and rides with the Biker Chicks toward the rocket's crash site. Bungee follows the Jade Rabbit into exiled Lunarian Gobi's workshop, where Fei Fei begins to uncover Lunarian history and the role of Chang'e. The search broadens the mission beyond a simple gift.

Fei Fei and Gobi reach Lunaria and discover that Chang'e's gift is embedded in a mooncake: a broken half of an open jade circle matching the one Chang'e wears. Fei Fei realizes this mooncake fragment is the key to Chang'e's gift. The revelation reframes the quest as a personal journey of memory and forgiveness.

Fei Fei and friends return to Lunaria's palace, rejoin Chin and Bungee, and present the gift to Chang'e. Chang'e uses the gift to form a complete jade circle, and Houyi briefly reunites with Chang'e before fading away. The moment deepens the emotional stakes of moving on from loss.

Houyi urges Chang'e to move on, and his departure leaves Chang'e in a state of depression. Lunaria darkens as Chang'e's sorrow spreads, and Fei Fei also feels the weight of grief through a vision of her mother. The two begin to understand that holding on prevents healing.

Fei Fei and Chang'e realize they must move on from their tragedies by embracing the love that surrounds them. Their mutual support helps lift Lunaria's darkness and restores light to the moon kingdom. The idea of love and memory becomes a source of strength.

Chang'e thanks Fei Fei and allows her and Chin to return to Earth, while Bungee remains with Jade Rabbit and Gobi's banishment is lifted. Fei Fei accepts her father’s marriage to Mrs. Zhong and welcomes Chin as her stepsibling. A sense of family reconciliation settles in.

About a year later, Fei Fei is twelve and living happily with her new family. During the Moon Festival, she sits with her father and looks up at the Moon as cranes fly toward it, symbolizing enduring wonder and connection. The story closes on a note of love, acceptance, and future possibilities.
