In present-day, Jason picks up the cursed board game from Malek, a disabled shop owner who keeps the artifact behind a wary gaze. Malek hints at trouble to come but does not fully explain the game’s rules, instead offering a cryptic warning. The ominous object promises a wish to the winner and danger to the loser.

After rain disperses the beach house party, Erica suggests that the remaining friends—Jason, Tomas, Lisa, Elena, Miguel, and Pablo—play the game. The others agree, bringing a sense of reckless curiosity to an activity with dangerous overtones. The group gathers as the storm subsides and the game begins.
