Eva Bergh is a bank clerk with aspirations of becoming an artist. At a party she encounters the wealthy Harald Ribe, who instantly falls for her and proposes marriage. Lacking work and a home, she agrees and moves to Harald’s estate, where she enjoys comfort but feels torn, longing for her former friends and the freedom she has left behind.
