Bill O’Brien is promoted to lieutenant after arresting gang leader Mike Patello for murder. His sweetheart Ruth worries because her brother Johnny, who witnessed the killing, intends to testify. Captain Antrim tells Bill his father, J.P., has just been released from prison and doesn’t know his son is a cop. J.P. meets an old friend, gets drunk, is arrested for robbery, then returns the loot to spare Bill’s reputation. Johnny is killed before he can testify; Patello is freed but confronted by J.P., who proves his guilt and is killed in a struggle with police. Bill thinks about resigning but, reassured by Ruth’s love, decides to stay on the force.
