Severino do Quixadá (Renato Aragão), a modest goat‑herder from Brazil’s northeast, saves Captain Virgulano (Nelson Xavier) and his cangaceiro band from an ambush staged by their relentless foe lieutenant Zé Bezerra (José Dumont). The Captain escapes with a mysterious box taken from a robbed train in Cajarana. While fleeing the gunfire, Severino and his bumbling companions Mussum and Zacarias stumble into the cangaceiros’ camp, using the chaos to slip away.
