Eduardo Moscovis plays Danilo, a theater director haunted by the 19th‑century miscarriage of justice against farmer Manoel da Motta Coqueiro, a case that sparked Brazil’s move to abolish the death penalty. Urged by a mysterious woman, he stages a production in which he embodies Coqueiro and casts psychiatric patients in the remaining roles. As the boundary between performance and reality dissolves, Danilo relives the historic events, ever aware of his character’s tragic fate, while the film uses eccentric characters and twists to examine capital punishment from a fresh perspective.
