Dan, an employee of Pritchard and Pritchard in San Francisco, loves Maisie, nicknamed “the icebox.” When a ship’s captain, stricken with leprosy, asks Dan to mind his South Sea island daughter Tamea, Dan complies. Tamea demands a kiss before accepting him and soon feels angry about being unlike Dan and Maisie. Dan moves to the island and discovers that paradise isn’t as perfect as imagined.
