They decide to kill Aaron, a former ally, to eliminate a traitor and provoke a targeted police response. They hope police will send a train past Glenrowan, which they plan to ambush and slaughter the survivors with the help of sympathisers. The plan reveals their escalation and willingness to orchestrate a larger-scale confrontation.

Aaron is killed at night and the gang reaches the Glenrowan hotel. Curnow, an inmate, convinces Ned to release him, but he warns the advancing train. The siege begins as police begin firing on the inn, erupting into chaos.

Two remaining gang members shoot themselves off screen, and the scene shifts to Ned shooting at police on the tracks. The inn is set on fire as the confrontation nears its end. Ned is eventually overpowered by the police and falls amid the assault.

Ned is brought to trial and prosecuted by the same judge who sentenced his mother. He is sentenced to death, sealing his fate in the historical account. He tells the judge, 'I will meet you there,' a defiant line implying hell or the afterlife.
