Isabel Green finds herself overwhelmed by the demands of her daily life as her husband, Rory, goes off to fight in the Second World War. Balancing the responsibilities of maintaining the family farm and working at the local shop run by the eccentric Mrs. Docherty, she also faces the challenge of raising her three spirited children: 12-year-old Norman, 11-year-old Megan 'Megsie', and 6-year-old Vincent.

The situation becomes even more complicated when their affluent and pompous city cousins, Cyril and his 11-year-old sister Celia, arrive from the city due to evacuation. As tensions rise with the ongoing conflict, Isabel's burdens multiply. Enter the enchanting Nanny McPhee, who appears just when her assistance is most needed. Despite her magical abilities, initially, the children resist her help and continue their squabbling. However, Nanny McPhee soon employs her powers to teach them a lesson by making them experience the same harm they inflict on one another, while also endangering important letters from their missing father, Rory. Luckily, once the children sincerely apologize to each other, peace is restored.

Meanwhile, Isabel's brother-in-law Phil finds himself in serious trouble after losing his half of the family farm through gambling. In desperation, he attempts to coerce Isabel into selling her half of the farm, even releasing a litter of piglets to be sold to a neighboring farmer. However, the children band together to thwart Phil's plan, which ultimately helps them develop a stronger bond.

In a moment of camaraderie, Isabel organizes a picnic as a gesture of thanks, during which Mrs. Docherty's husband, who serves as an ARP Warden, warns them of the impending dangers of bombs. The situation takes a dark turn when Phil delivers devastating news: Rory has been killed in action. The news shakes everyone, but Norman, fueled by the belief that he can sense his father's presence, insists that Rory is still alive. He shares this conviction with Cyril, who, after some initial skepticism, starts to believe in Norman's intuition.

Determined to find out the truth, the two boys persuade Nanny McPhee to help them journey to the War Office in London, where Cyril and Celia's father, Lord Gray, holds a high-ranking position. Upon confronting Lord Gray about their father's fate, Norman faces derision for his hopeful disbelief, but Cyril's revelations about their parents' divorced situation prompt Lord Gray to dig deeper into the matter. Meanwhile, Norman opens up to Cyril about where he'd like them to live, inviting him and Celia to join the Green family permanently.

When Lord Gray returns, he confirms that Rory is not dead but rather missing in action, and there’s no official record of the telegram Phil claimed to have sent. Sensing an opportunity, Norman deduces that Phil had forged the message. Back at home, while they are preoccupied with their journey, Megsie, Celia, and Vincent work to prevent Isabel from signing papers that would hand over the farm to Phil. They create diversions, such as feigned mouse sightings and hiding pens. Just as Isabel is about to finalize the sale, an unexpected turn of events occurs—a German pilot accidentally drops a bomb on the Green's barley field. Fortunately, it fails to detonate but leaves a mark of ink that obliterates the papers, saving Isabel from signing away her family's livelihood.

As Nanny McPhee, Norman, and Cyril return, Phil confesses his guilt regarding the forgery and is promptly secured by Isabel. The excitement continues as everyone gathers to witness Mr. Docherty attempting to defuse the bomb; when he faints, Megsie bravely steps up, ultimately succeeding with the assistance of her siblings and Nanny McPhee's magical jackdaw, Mr. Edelweiss.

In a burst of magic, Nanny McPhee aids in the harvest of barley, effectively preventing Phil from falling prey to the relentless pursuers sent by Mrs. Biggles. The film culminates in a joyous celebration, and as Nanny McPhee prepares to take her leave—having fulfilled her purpose—Mrs. Docherty reveals her true identity as baby Agatha from the first installment. Isabel and the children chase after Nanny McPhee, only to witness Rory returning home with a bandaged arm. The family reunites in an emotional embrace, marking a heartwarming conclusion to their harrowing experiences.

In a light-hearted post-credits scene, an elephant conjured by Nanny McPhee, who previously stole the show by sharing Vincent's bed, is seen merrily operating a magical device invented to entertain the piglets.

Nanny McPhee Returns Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Nanny McPhee Returns (2010): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Phil forge the telegram claiming Rory was killed in action?

Phil forged the telegram because he had gambled away his own half of the family farm and was being pursued by hired men sent by the bookmaker Mrs. Biggles. By making Isabel believe her husband Rory was dead, he hoped she would be emotionally devastated and desperate enough to sign her half of the farm over to him, giving him the money he needed to escape his pursuers.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Phil is shown releasing the piglets to be sold off and pressuring Isabel about the farm, hinting at his desperation.

Q2

How does Norman know his father is still alive when everyone believes the telegram?

Norman has a strong intuitive sense of his father's presence and simply refuses to accept the news. He convinces himself and eventually Cyril that Rory is only missing rather than dead, which gives him the courage to push for an investigation at the War Office. His conviction turns out to be correct, since Lord Gray later confirms there is no official record of Rory's death.

Foreshadowing: Norman is established early on as unusually perceptive and emotionally connected to his father, which pays off when he refuses to accept the bad news.

Q3

How does the bomb in the barley field save the farm from being sold?

A German pilot accidentally drops a bomb on the Green's barley field while Isabel is on the verge of signing the papers that would hand the farm to Phil. The bomb fails to detonate, but the impact smears a mark of ink across the documents, destroying Phil's contract just before it can be signed and saving Isabel from losing her family's livelihood.

Foreshadowing: Mrs. Docherty's husband, the ARP Warden, warns the family about bomb threats during the picnic scene, setting up the later bombing.

Q4

Why does Phil want Isabel to sell her half of the farm?

By pressuring Isabel into selling her half, he can collect the proceeds and pay off his debts. He even releases the piglets to be sold to a neighboring farmer as part of his scheme to force her hand.

Q5

Why does Nanny McPhee make the children feel the pain they inflict on each other?

Nanny McPhee uses her magic to teach the children a direct lesson about empathy after they refuse to stop fighting. By making each child experience the same harm they caused a sibling or cousin, she forces them to understand how their behavior hurts others. Q6

Why do Norman and Cyril travel to the War Office in London?

Norman convinces Cyril and Nanny McPhee to take him to the War Office because he refuses to accept that his father Rory is dead and wants to confirm the truth. Q7

How does Cyril convince Lord Gray to investigate Rory's status?

When Lord Gray initially dismisses Norman and mocks his hopeful disbelief, Cyril confronts him about his own neglectful parenting and reveals that he and Celia were sent away because of their parents' divorce. The guilt and embarrassment of that revelation push Lord Gray to take the boys seriously and look into the army's records about Rory.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Cyril is shown as pompous and dismissive, but his bond with Norman softens him, setting up this confrontation.

Q8

How do Megsie, Celia, and Vincent stop Isabel from signing the farm papers?

While Norman and Cyril are away in London, the three younger children work together to delay Isabel long enough for help to arrive. They create constant distractions, including pretending to see mice in the house, hiding pens, and generally getting in the way. Their stalling buys just enough time for the German bomb to fall on the papers before Isabel can sign them.

Q9

How does Megsie manage to defuse the unexploded bomb?

After Mr. Docherty faints while attempting to disarm the bomb, Megsie bravely takes over with the help of her siblings and Nanny McPhee's magical jackdaw, Mr. Edelweiss. Together, they carefully complete the defusal, turning a moment of panic into a victory that solidifies the children's teamwork.

Why does Nanny McPhee help with the barley harvest at the end?

By solving the financial crisis herself, she removes the last threat to the family's future and signals that her work at the Green farm is complete.

Q12

He finally makes it back to the farm, wounded but alive, just as Nanny McPhee is preparing to leave, giving the family the joyful reunion they had been hoping for.
