All sorts of unlikely figures rise in wartime, and Indonesia is no exception. In this comedy, a pickpocket named Naga Bonar seizes the chaos of the Japanese withdrawal in 1945 to proclaim himself a general of the Freedom Forces as the Dutch attempt to re‑establish control. Over time his mask becomes real, turning him into a soldier and patriot.
