Myra Breckinridge (1970) Timeline Explained – Every Event in Order

Myra's assault of Rusty stems from her radical ideological mission to 'destroy the last vestigial traces of traditional manhood.' She views the attack as part of a broader social experiment to dismantle conventional masculinity and realign gender power structures. The assault also serves to break Rusty's relationship with Mary Ann, whom Myra later targets for her own sexual experiments.

Foreshadowing: Myra's classroom discussions about femdom and her stated goal of eliminating traditional manhood foreshadow this violent act.

Myra claims to be Myron's widow seeking half the school or $500,000, but her true agenda is far more radical. She wants to use the acting school as a platform to advance her philosophical mission of eliminating traditional masculinity, reducing population, and creating what she believes will be a new social era with reordered gender relations.

Foreshadowing: Myra's controversial classroom discussions about semiotics and femdom reveal her intent to challenge conventional gender norms.

No. Buck's investigation reveals there is no death certificate for Myron, and Myron never actually died. This discovery invalidates Myra's claim to be Myron's widow and exposes her elaborate scheme as fabricated.

Foreshadowing: The mysterious 'manifestation' of Myron that appears to debate with Myra hints that the real Myron was always present.

After confronting Myra with evidence that Myron never died, Buck suggests that Myra did not have her testes removed during the surgery. This implies that Myra's physical transformation may be incomplete or that she may not have undergone the gender confirmation procedure she claimed, raising questions about her true identity and the nature of her transformation.

Foreshadowing: The ambiguous physical state hinted at earlier in Myra's confident assertion of her new identity.

The 'manifestation' of Myron tells Myra she has become too ambitious in her radical scheme. In a violent turning point, Myron literally runs Myra down with a car, suggesting that her plan has spiraled beyond her control and that the original Myron is rejecting her extreme methods.

Foreshadowing: Tensions between Myra and the appearing 'Myron' throughout the film build to this confrontation.

The film reveals that Myron was in a hospital crash victims ward all along, not dead from a gender surgery. The narrative reframes the entire story - Myra may have been a hallucination, manifestation, or alternate persona of Myron himself. Mary Ann becomes Myron's nurse at the hospital, and the entire 'social experiment' story is revealed as something that occurred within Myron's own fractured psyche.

Foreshadowing: The ambiguous 'manifestations' of Myron and the unstable narrative throughout the film set up this twist.

When Myra pursues Mary Ann to join her social experiment, Mary Ann rejects the idea and instead declares she wishes she were a man. This line crystallizes the film's exploration of gender fluidity and suggests Mary Ann recognizes the performative nature of gender roles, potentially wanting the power that traditional masculinity offers in this world.

Foreshadowing: Myra's earlier targeting of Mary Ann for her bisexuality experiments.

The Raquel Welch magazine on Myron's hospital bedside table serves as a meta-commentary on celebrity, gender performance, and Hollywood spectacle. It closes the loop on the film's fascination with celebrity and the commodification of desire, while also pointing to Raquel Welch as the actress playing Myra - blurring the lines between character and star, reality and performance.

Foreshadowing: The film's ongoing commentary on Hollywood's Golden Age and celebrity throughout Myra's classroom sessions.

The film deliberately leaves this ambiguous, but the twist ending suggests Myra may be a manifestation, hallucination, or alternate personality of Myron rather than a separate person who underwent surgery. The reveal that Myron never died and was in the hospital the entire time supports the interpretation that Myra represented Myron's fractured identity or radical alter-ego pursuing the gender experiment.

Foreshadowing: The 'manifestations' of Myron that appear to argue with Myra, and the revelation that no death certificate exists.

Leticia van Allen is a powerful female casting agent who uses her influence to attract young male actors. She represents another form of predatory female sexuality in the film and competes with Myra for control over the male characters. She takes Rusty as her lover after he becomes entangled in Myra's schemes, adding another layer of manipulation and commodification of desire to the story.

Foreshadowing: Myra's influence over Rusty sets the stage for Leticia's intervention.
