On a night in the 80s under a full moon, Heather transforms into a wolf for the first time, attacking her human mother Patti and clawing her chest. The incident reveals that she inherited the curse from her father Henry.

A couple years later Heather works with Henry at a local diner and plays hockey with her younger twin brothers Cooper and Hardy. Patti has become an alcoholic, affecting family life and adding strain to Heather's world.

Heather meets Jonny, a figure skater who just moved into the neighborhood with her father, around the local rink. Jonny already has a boyfriend, Rick, who is less than pleasant toward her.

Heather and Jonny begin to bond, with Heather watching Jonny skate at the rink. The two later visit a casino with Jonny and her friends, and on the night of a full moon Heather transforms soon after she tries to head home.

The next morning Heather is found unconscious and wrapped in a blanket on Patti and Henry's doorstep. Patti and Henry remind her to be more careful about her condition.

Heather and Jonny keep hanging out despite trouble looming over them. Heather often has private fantasies about Jonny, such as feeding her eggs, which complicate their relationship.

Cooper and Hardy sneak into a bar and catch the two getting intimate, which strains Hardy and makes him cold toward Heather. The revelation creates tension within the family.

One night Jonny takes Heather to her house and they have sex. Heather experiences a fantasy where Jonny is naked and removes Heather's underwear, and Heather partially turns, disturbing Jonny.

After the night, Heather asks Jonny's father about what happened, but he dismisses her and ends the conversation. The moment further isolates Heather and pushes her further into confusion.

Heather is invited to a party where Jonny tearfully tells her they can't talk anymore. Heather has a breakdown back at her house, where Patti tries to comfort her.

Not long after, Henry dies of a heart attack at work, with his body reverting to wolf form. The loss deepens Heather's grief and fear, intensifying her turmoil.

Heather goes to the bar to confront Jonny about the breakup, but Rick attacks her and drags her outside. Heather transforms during the beating, killing Rick and fleeing into the woods.

The next morning Patti finds Heather naked, bruised, and blood-soaked on her bedroom door. She baths and tends to Heather, then advises her to move out since the town isn't safe for her.

Heather drives off into the night, seeking a safer place away from the town's prejudices and dangers. The decision marks a new, uncertain chapter in her life.

In a post-credits scene, Jonny's friend Otto is being interviewed about Rick's death. He cryptically says, 'You can't mess with animals, man. Cardinal rule,' underscoring the film's warning.
