Set in England in 1954, Fitzwilliam encounters Miss Pinkerton on a train bound for London. She warns him that a murderer is at large in the tranquil village of Wychwood‑under‑Ashe, where locals dismiss the recent fatalities as mere accidents. Confident she knows the truth, Miss Pinkerton is later found dead en route to Scotland Yard, prompting Fitzwilliam to pursue the killer before another victim falls.
