Hua Mulan, Nancy Wan-Seung Chan, is a young woman living with her aging father, He Jianfei, in the Tang Dynasty. She is fearless and skilled in martial arts and archery, traits her father has nurtured even as she indulges in a bit of mischief. After a day of hunting, she crafts an elaborate ruse to win an impossible archery challenge, fooling the Li village into granting her freedom. When she returns, she discovers that her father has been conscripted to fight, and she resolves to take his place, stepping into a role that challenges the expectations placed on her.
On the day of departure, two conscripts shadow her journey, probing her origin and purpose while an additional conscript intervenes. Mulan responds with a sharp display that ends the harassment, then she stops at an inn where she unexpectedly crosses paths with the conscript who introduces himself as Yuandu Liu, Mei Xi. This encounter marks the beginning of a perilous alliance that will shape the years ahead.
For three years, Mulan and Yuandu work side by side to defend the northern border from a rising barbarian threat. Yuandu brings troubling news of a secret assault, but the commander remains in denial, allowing complacency to cloud judgment and leaving the army underprepared. Motivated by the need to prove the danger, the two gain approval for a reconnaissance mission aimed at uncovering the truth. They split up, with Mulan disguising herself as a barbarian hunter and Yuandu as a woman, each pursuing clues from different angles to locate the enemy’s camp.
Mulan’s resourcefulness comes to the fore when she manages to elicit crucial numbers from two barbarian guards through deception. She supplements this with the dispatch of a barbarian messenger to secure further proof, then reports her findings directly to the Marshal. However, the commander—bribed by the enemy generals—dismisses her evidence, insisting it is merely a decoy. Undeterred by the corruption at the top, Mulan continues to prepare in secret, driven by a resolve to safeguard her homeland.
When the day of conflict arrives, strategic courage and hidden plans pay off as the defenders reclaim their city. The commander is exposed as a traitor and faces execution, a turning point that reinforces Mulan’s faith in perseverance over official power. Returning to the Imperial capital, she is offered a prestigious position in the Emperor’s court, yet she declines, preferring to return to her home and the life she once knew.
Back in her feminine role, Mulan marries Yuandu and settles into a quieter life. Yet her extraordinary service leaves a lasting mark on the realm. After her heroic deeds are acknowledged, Mulan finally reveals her life as a woman, while Liu symbolically restores the conventional male role, signaling a complex balance between duty, identity, and tradition that resonates long after the battles fade.
