In 1957 London, Mrs. Ada Harris, portrayed by Lesley Manville, is a diligent widow making her living as a cleaning lady. Despite her hardworking nature and generosity, she receives little appreciation from her clients. Ada treasures the companionship of her close friends, Vi and Archie played by Jason Isaacs, who share her experiences and challenges.
Her life takes a turn when she becomes fixated on a client’s stunning haute couture Dior dress, igniting a deep desire to own something equally exquisite. When she unexpectedly learns about a war widow’s pension, she seizes the opportunity to travel to Paris with the hope of purchasing a dress. Upon her arrival, she fortuitously finds herself at the unveiling of Dior’s 10th-anniversary collection, where she meets André, the accountant for Dior, and Natasha, a model, both of whom quickly befriend her. However, the elitist Claudine, played by Isabelle Huppert, initially disapproves of Ada encroaching on the exclusive realm of haute couture and refuses to take her on as a client.
As fortune would have it, Dior is struggling financially, leading them to reluctantly accept Ada’s commission under the condition of cash payment. Enthralled by a captivating red dress named the Temptation, Ada soon faces adversity when a rival client, envious of her interest, places a competing order, forcing Dior to prioritize her over the stunning garment and instead offer her a green version.
During her fittings in Paris, Ada resides with André and encourages him to voice his true feelings for Natasha, who shares his passion for existential philosophy. Simultaneously, Ada captures the attention of a charming Marquis, played by Lambert Wilson, who initially seems to take a genuine interest in her. However, her heart sinks when she discovers his affection stems from a nostalgic reminiscence of a cleaning lady from his childhood.
When Claudine dismisses several Dior employees due to budget cuts, Ada rises to the occasion and organizes a strike, demanding that Claudine and Christian Dior hear André’s innovative ideas to make the brand more inclusive for clients like herself. Though Claudine resigns in frustration, Ada’s leadership persuades her to return. Meanwhile, Ada’s matchmaking efforts for André and Natasha prove successful, sparking a romance between the two.
Upon her return to London, Ada eagerly anticipates debuting her new dress at a community dance. However, her joy is short-lived when she lends the dress to Pamela, an aspiring actress portrayed by Rose Williams, who inadvertently ruins it by standing too close to a heater, setting the fabric ablaze. In a wonderful twist of fate, her friends from Dior, upon reading about the mishap, send her the coveted red dress after the original buyer defaults. Ada dazzles everyone at the dance, capturing all eyes in her vibrant garment. As she glows with happiness, Archie reassures her with heartfelt words, declaring that she is a beautiful person, both inside and out. Together, they share a dance, celebrating the triumphs of life and friendship.
