Moving Day

Clyde works as a mover at Redmond's Furniture but is unhappy with the job and dreams of a career change. He is divorced and struggles with custody of his kids, fueling a sense of loneliness and dissatisfaction.

On the 14th and 15th of each month, Clyde is supposed to take the kids out of town for a vacation. This obligation underlines his longing for stability and a better life.

Clyde injures his shoulder on one job and is forced to perform another heavy haul the same day. Later, he drops an antique drawer down a flight of stairs, damaging the client’s house.

The homeowner sues the moving company for damages. Wilf settles the case for 7,500 in cash, despite the company being insured against accidents.

Wilf does not fire Clyde but places him on probation after the incident. Clyde asks for the 14th-15th off, but does not receive a straight answer from Wilf.

AJ is put on probation for drinking on the job and has a habit of making inappropriate gestures at female customers or sleeping with them if they agree. Linda, Wilf’s secretary, is very beautiful but receives little attention from the staff.

Wilf confesses to Linda that, while Redmond's collected insurance premiums from its customers, the firm never actually carried insurance. This revelation hints at a corrupt underbelly in the company and the emptiness the staff feel in their lives.

Clyde experiences a nightmare in which he lifts the seat of a chair and sees dozens of mice; he’s offered a lifelong job with Redmond's, but he would rather be a street construction worker. He wakes crying, believing he is going to be fired.

Dennis posts a sign on Clyde's back as a prank, but Cedric reminds the others that Clyde is on probation. Clyde confronts Dennis, pins him to a wall, and demands the video be deleted; they eventually reconcile.

Cedric tells Clyde he is quitting after his wife’s grandmother dies and they inherit property in South Carolina. He decides to support his wife’s plan to open a new business and notes he’s paid under the table. He gives Wilf one day's notice, which upsets him.

Before leaving town, Cedric befriends a city council worker and asks for a recommendation for Clyde’s city job. Clyde is later sent to the employment bureau to post Cedric's replacement and spots Dartmouth hiring.

The next morning AJ is arrested and police find the insurance papers on him. The police question Wilf about the papers, noting he had claimed a different set earlier. Clyde quits his job after feeling manipulated and then negotiates a recommendation letter from Wilf in exchange for his silence. Later, Clyde confesses that he was the one who ratted AJ out, not Dennis.

The workers go out to see a band and plan to drink afterward, but Clyde feels excluded when Dennis wants to bring women. He returns to Redmond's office and hallucinates Wilf's dog levitating and Wilf weeping; Cedric warns him not to trust Wilf.

Clyde spends quality time with his kids and finally lands a cushy city job, achieving the stability and life he longed for throughout the story. The film closes on Clyde embracing a brighter future.
