In 19th-century Malaysia, a Dutch trader named Almayer relentlessly pursues the legend of a hidden gold mountain. His ambitions are complicated by his manipulative wife, interference from the colonial government, and the complex politics of local leaders and Arab merchants. Adding to his troubles is his daughter’s forbidden love for a Malay prince involved in the fight for freedom. Almayer's dream becomes entangled in a web of conflicting loyalties and dangerous power struggles.
