Thampi, a former Indian Railways accountant who retired in the mid-1980s after his son’s death, lives a quiet, almost solitary life in his ancestral house. His world softly brightens when his grandson, Bhasker—known to family as Bhasi or Pachu—arrives to spend vacation time with Thampi. Bhasi is studying medicine at Bangalore Medical College, and his return brings a warm flutter of activity to the old home. Accompanying Bhasi are his friends, including Ashokan as Ranjith Menon, and Ajayan Adoor as Krishnankutty, whose youthful energy lifts Thampi’s spirits. Bhasi’s engagement to Bhadra, the granddaughter of a doctor who is a longtime family friend, adds a finishing touch of happiness to the visit, and Thampi savors this rare, lively tide washing back through his quiet life.

During the vacation, the group often heads to the nearby beach for swims and small adventures, a ritual that rekindles old memories for Thampi as he watches his grandson fade into the wide sea. On one such day, a sudden pull of the current traps Bhasi and Lopez in the surf; only Lopez makes it back to shore. A frantic rescue attempt by the police and locals fails to recover Bhasi, and the town is shaken by the loss. The community clings to a local belief tied to the sea: whatever is taken by the ocean is returned on the third day, a motif that becomes central to the unfolding tragedy and to the film’s title.

Thampi struggles to accept the catastrophe. He refuses to admit Bhasi is gone, masking his pain with a brave front as he consoles Bhasi’s mother, his friends, and the woman he previously planned for his family’s future, Bhadra. The days pass, the search continues, and the village grids itself around the calendar’s grim rhythm. When Bhasi’s body is finally recovered on the third day, the mood shifts from sorrow to a formal farewell as a funeral is conducted. Bhasi’s friends prepare to leave the following day, but they decide to return to the beach one last time to bid him goodbye. It is then that Thampi arrives with priests to perform the Bali rites.

In a moment that seals the film’s meditation on hope and despair, Thampi, who has clung to a flicker of possibility until the last moment, takes the balichoru—the ceremonial rice ball—into his hands. He recalls the younger Bhasi swimming freely in the sea and, in a heart-wrenching act of surrender to loss, he walks toward the surf with the ritual in hand. The scene unfolds with the weight of years and grief, and Thampi steps into the water, letting the sea claim him as it did Bhasi. The sea acceptance, the ritual of Bali, and the final, quiet tragedy converge to reveal a man who chooses to join his grandson in the very fate that separated them, a decision that leaves the rest of the family and village to confront a new, empty shore.
