In 2011, astronauts Brian Harper and Jocinda Fowler, along with a newcomer named Marcus, embark on a Space Shuttle mission to repair a satellite. This mission is met with excitement and promise as they prepare for their journey into space.

Their mission takes a catastrophic turn when the crew is attacked by a mysterious entity known as the Black Swarm. This attack results in the tragic death of Marcus and leaves Fowler incapacitated, forcing Harper to return to the shuttle with limited support.

Despite having no functional electronics, Harper pilots the damaged spacecraft back to Earth successfully. His heroics initially earn him accolades, but suspicion arises as he tries to recount the truth of their harrowing experience.

An extensive investigation follows the mission, lasting eighteen months, which ultimately places blame on human error without acknowledging the attacks. Harper faces skepticism, especially when Fowler fails to support him during a crucial hearing, leading to his dismissal from NASA.

As time passes, Harper goes through a painful divorce from his wife Brenda, who gains custody of their son Sonny. Brenda later remarries Tom, further complicating Harper's life as he grapples with his personal and professional failures.

Ten years later, conspiracy theorist K.C. Houseman makes a startling discovery that the Moon’s orbit is shifting closer to Earth. He tries to alert NASA, but his warnings are ignored, prompting him to seek Harper’s help.

Eventually, NASA confirms Houseman's findings and initiates a mission to the Moon aboard an SLS Block 2 spacecraft. Unfortunately, they are met with the return of the Black Swarm, resulting in the loss of three lunar astronauts sent to investigate a deep shaft on the Moon.

Amidst the chaos, Harper's son Sonny encounters trouble with the law after a drunk driving arrest. Harper struggles to secure his release, while Tom offers to use his connections to aid Sonny as tensions rise.

As the Moon's orbit deteriorates causing tsunamis and other disasters, Harper realizes the persistent threat that Houseman has warned about. Together, they survive a massive tidal surge that devastates the West Coast of the United States.

Fowler, now the deputy director of NASA, uncovers startling evidence linking the Moon's abnormalities to findings from the Apollo 11 mission. She learns of a radio blackout during Apollo 11 that concealed the Moon’s hollow nature.

Fowler retrieves a military program known as ZX7, which includes an EMP device developed to combat the Swarm. Looking to save Earth, she gathers Harper and Houseman for a new mission using the retired Space Shuttle Endeavour.

The new mission faces intense challenges, including losing an engine mid-flight, causing Fowler to initially consider disbanding the crew. However, a last-minute decision leads to a launch that narrowly avoids a colossal tsunami.

During their mission, Harper ingeniously disables all electronics on board to evade the Swarm. Upon investigating the Moon's core, they discover that the Swarm is harvesting energy from a white dwarf, revealing the Moon's hidden history.

Under the guidance of a benign AI from the Moon, Harper devises a plan to stop the malevolent AI. As the clock runs down, a nuclear strike order is issued, but General Davidson makes the ultimate sacrifice to save the team.

After successfully evading the Swarm and returning to Earth, Harper and Fowler reunite with their loved ones, including Sonny and Brenda. The Moon’s systems revert to normal, marking the beginning of a slow recovery from the chaos.
