Stuart Miley, a cartoonist, experiences growing excitement around the launch of his animated series featuring Monkeybone, a cheeky monkey character he created. His agent and friend, Herb, is equally thrilled, anticipating the associated merchandise to become a hit.

Stu plans to propose to his girlfriend, Julie McElroy, who works at a sleep institute and is known for her kindness. This moment is filled with hope and anticipation as he envisions a future together with her.

Tragedy strikes when Stu gets into a severe car accident, leading to a coma that changes his fate dramatically. In this liminal state, his essence is transported to an otherworldly place known as Down Town.

In Down Town, a bizarre carnival-like limbo, Stu is surrounded by bizarre mythological creatures and the subconscious creations of its guests. Here, he encounters Monkeybone, his own comic character, who adds to the chaos of his unexpected new environment.

Stu and Monkeybone learn they need Exit Passes to escape Down Town. This realization sets the stage for their adventure, filled with humor and absurdity as they navigate this strange realm.

Hypnos, the god of Sleep, invites Stu and Monkeybone to a pajama party, revealing that Stu must steal an Exit Pass from Death. This revelation escalates the urgency of their quest and shapes their next steps.

Guided by Hypnos, Stu and Monkeybone embark on a frantic adventure to the Land of Death. Their disguise and cunning are put to the test as they face unforeseen challenges in their heist for freedom.

Meanwhile, Julie tries to awaken Stu from his coma using a powerful chemical concoction called Oneirix, which induces nightmares. Her determination showcases the depth of her feelings for him, and her actions parallel the chaos unfolding in Down Town.

Upon securing an Exit Pass, Monkeybone betrays Stu by stealing it for his own greed. Captivated by Hypnos's devious plans, Monkeybone sets off a series of ridiculous pranks that jeopardize not only their escape but also the safety of those around them.

As chaos ensues, Stu teams up with Miss Kitty, a spirited waitress, to facilitate his return to the living world. Together, they concoct a plan to thwart Monkeybone’s schemes and regain control over his life.

With Death's assistance, Stu gains a limited opportunity to alter the course of events in his life. Thrust into the body of an organ donor, he must act swiftly while balancing the precarious nature of life and death.

Stu reunites with Julie at a charity banquet, but tensions rise as Monkeybone attempts to propose to her, blissfully unaware of the turmoil surrounding them. His actions culminate in a dramatic showdown revealing the stakes of the situation.
