Yong-gu was arrested because a bystander misread a moment of CPR as something inappropriate. When the police commissioner's daughter slipped on ice and a brick fell on her head, killing her, Yong-gu attempted to perform CPR on her body. A witness misinterpreted this as an attack, leading to his wrongful arrest for rape and murder despite his developmental disability.

Earlier in the market, Yong-gu was already targeted and assaulted by the commissioner himself over the backpack incident, establishing the commissioner's hostility toward him.

Yong-gu confessed to protect his daughter Ye-sung. After being beaten by the commissioner and facing pressure, he was given an impossible choice: confess to a crime he did not commit to ensure Ye-sung's safety and future, or maintain his innocence and risk the commissioner harming her. He chose to lie and claim he killed her, leading to his death sentence.

The warden's growing belief in Yong-gu's innocence and the inmates' preparation for trial had given hope that justice might prevail, making the confession even more tragic.

The inmates of Room 7 built a hot air balloon to help Yong-gu escape during a prison concert. Yong-gu and Ye-sung boarded the balloon, but as they attempted to flee, the rope caught on the barbed wire surrounding the prison. The escape failed, though the connection between father and daughter remained unbroken.

The balloon had been a symbol of hope throughout the film, first appearing as a dream of freedom and later as the means of escape.

Sixteen years after Yong-gu's execution, his daughter Ye-sung (now an aspiring lawyer) used her father's case for a class project. The mock trial became real when a judge overturned the original verdict and granted Yong-gu a posthumous acquittal. The court also ordered a reinvestigation of the commissioner's daughter's death.

The film opened with Ye-sung leaving a courthouse, hinting at the resolution to come.

The execution date was set for December 23, which was coincidentally Ye-sung's birthday. This tragic coincidence added to the emotional weight of the story, as the inmates and Yong-gu celebrated her birthday together in prison one last time before the execution.

After Yong-gu saved So Yang-ho's life during a stabbing incident, the gang leader and his cellmates became his allies. They coached Yong-gu on how to answer prosecution questions during trial prep, helped him endure prison life, built the hot air balloon for the escape attempt, and supported him emotionally throughout his ordeal.

Yong-gu was initially ostracized by the other inmates who feared the stigma of his alleged crime, making his eventual acceptance and support more meaningful.

The warden realized Yong-gu was not the attacker after witnessing his genuine kindness and integrity. Specifically, Yong-gu saved the warden from an arson attack, demonstrating his good character. Over time, the warden allowed Ye-sung to visit daily after school and recognized that Dodo was not the criminal many claimed him to be.

During Ye-sung's first prison visit during choir day, the warden glimpsed the tender relationship between father and daughter, planting seeds of doubt about Yong-gu's guilt.

The Sailor Moon backpack represented Yong-gu and Ye-sung's shared dream and his promise to be a good father. When the commissioner and his daughter bought it before Yong-gu could, it symbolized the systemic injustice and power imbalance that would define their lives. The backpack became a poignant symbol of lost innocence and unfulfilled promises.

The backpack was introduced in the opening scene, establishing the father-daughter bond and the economic hardship they faced.

During Yong-gu's imprisonment, a rival gang attacked So Yang-ho with a knife. Despite being a newcomer and disliked by the other inmates, Yong-gu intervened and saved Yang-ho's life. This act of courage and compassion completely changed Yang-ho's perception of Yong-gu and earned him an unlikely ally.

After the escape failed, Yong-gu was not able to flee. He was executed on December 23. However, sixteen years later, Ye-sung successfully proved his innocence through a mock trial that became real, securing a posthumous acquittal. The film ends with Ye-sung imagining her father on the balloon waving goodbye, finding emotional closure.

The failed escape planted the seeds for the later resolution, as the memory of the balloon and the hope it represented stayed with Ye-sung.
