Ramu and Moses are orphan small-time crooks who scrape by scamming people with the help of their loyal sidekicks. Meanwhile, two college students, Dilip and Rekha, fall in love, setting up a clash between romance and ambition that threads through the entire story. Rekha’s father, Govindaswamy, a once-beggar who rose to become a wealthy industrialist, stands in stark contrast to his daughter’s modern heart. On the other side, Dilip’s mother, Rajalakshmi, is an arrogant, silver-spooned matron whose disdain for others sharpens the drama around family loyalties and social status.
